Michael Janigan was appointed as a full-time Commissioner in April 2017. Mr. Janigan brings to the OEB extensive experience advocating for consumers’ interests, having worked at the Public Interest Advocacy Centre since 1992, in roles as Executive Director and General Counsel and as Special Counsel for Consumer and Regulatory Affairs. A national organization, its main focus is the regulation of public utilities in the energy, telecommunications, broadcasting, financial services and transportation industries, as well as consumer issues associated with banking, privacy, competition, electronic commerce and general consumer protection. Mr. Janigan had oversight of all legal representation of public interest cases, primarily in regulatory tribunals such as the CRTC and the OEB, and included the presentation and advocacy of the consumer position before legislative committees, government policy makers and in the media. Mr. Janigan holds a B.A. (Science) and an LL.B, both from the University of Western Ontario. He also holds an LL.M in Competition Law from the University of London. He has been called to the Bar of the Law Society of Upper Canada and is also a member of the State Bar of California.
