The March 2014 directive to the OEB from the Minister of Energy (the DSM/CDM Directive), among other things, requires that an achievable potential study for natural gas efficiency in Ontario should be conducted every three years. The DSM/CDM Directive further states that the achievable potential study should, as far as is appropriate and reasonable, be coordinated with the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO).

2016 Study
The OEB oversaw the completion of the 2016 natural gas potential study to inform natural gas efficiency planning and programs, completed in June 2016.

2019 Study
The OEB and the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) conducted an integrated electricity and natural gas conservation achievable potential study (APS). The main objective of the APS was to identify and quantify energy savings (electricity and natural gas), GHG emission reductions and associated costs from demand side resources for the period from 2019-2038. The final report, completed in September 2019, is posted below. Additional details on the APS including background, objectives, outputs and governance can be found in the Project Charter and Engagement Plan on the IESO’s webpage.
