Electricity distribution licence

Section 57(a) of the Ontario Energy Board Act, 1998 provides that no person is permitted to own or operate a distribution system without a licence.

Complete and mail two copies of the application form to the OEB, along with any required attachments and a cheque or money order in Canadian funds made payable to the Ontario Energy Board.

For each licence application filed with the OEB, the applicant must submit a non-refundable application fee of:

  • $1,000 for applicants applying for a new electricity distributor licence;
    OR
  • $200 for applicants applying to renew their electricity distributor licence and have paid their annual registration fee.

A licensee must pay an annual registration fee for every year of its licence. The annual registration fee for an electricity distributor is $800.

Licensees must comply with the OEB's Distribution System Code, Affiliate Relationships Code for Electricity Distributors and Transmitters, Retail Settlement Code, Standard Supply Service Code, and all other conditions set out in their licence.
